Sun Protection is Imperative for Skin Care for All Ages
We are all exposed to the sun’s harmful rays and it does not discriminate as to our age. Sun protection is critical for everyone, regardless of age. It is our responsibility to be aware of the potential sun damage and take steps to reduce its impact on our skin.
The sun emits three types of UV radiation – UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC rays do not reach the earth’s surface and are not considered a major threat for skin damage. UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and play a role in both UVA and UVB tanning. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and play a role in aging and wrinkling of the skin. Therefore, when choosing a sunscreen, it is important to make sure that is provides protection from both UVA and UVB.
Skin Damage Caused by Sun Exposure
The sun has several effects on our skin, including:
• Increased risks of premature aging, wrinkles and age spots.
• Redness, stinging and burning sensations.
• Hyperpigmentation (darkening of skin).
• Rashes and other skin breakouts.
• Higher risk of skin cancers.
Sun Protection for All Ages
It is important to use sun protection for all ages, as our skin needs to be protected from the sun’s harmful rays at all times.
Tips for Sun Protection for Everyone:
- Wear sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days and when indoors.
- Avoid the sun from 10am-4pm, when UV rays are the strongest.
- Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
- Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours and after sweating or swimming.
- Cover up with clothes, hats, and sunglasses.
- Avoid tanning beds.
It is important to protect our skin from the sun all year round and there are a number of ways to do so. Sunscreen should be worn daily, even on cloudy days, as UVA rays can penetrate through clouds and windows. Additionally, clothing and hats should be worn, as they provide more coverage and are more effective at blocking UVA and UVB rays.
The sun’s radiation can be very damaging, particularly when we are exposed to it over extended periods of time. It is our responsibility to protect our skin and be mindful of the sun’s effects. Sun protection is critical for skin care at any age and we should all make sure to take steps to protect ourselves.
